The Metroid Marathon (2011) was the third marathon of the Metroid series hosted by TheSpeedGamers. This was their 23rd marathon, and their 19th for a charity. The charity for this marathon was Civic Force for Japanese Relief, aiding Japan in their troubles with the recent earthquakes and tsunamis. TSG Staff member JaggerG was able to attend and cover a number of games throughout the marathon. Chat OPs Calvin and Blaumagier (also known as Lothis) attended as well, supporting the marathon by gaming, commentating, and donating.
Once again, TheSpeedGamers teamed up with the guys at Fangamer to help support the marathon. While the marathon went on, TheSpeedGamers promoted the new Visor T-shirts that Fangamer made exclusively for the Metroid series. All proceeds made from the shirts during the Metroid Marathon would go directly to the charity.
To donate, TSG introduced a donation widget from “WePay.” It works just like the Chip-In! Widget that has traditionally been used for the charities in previous marathons. At the start of the marathon, only US viewers were able to donate with the new widget, but that was soon remedied to allow viewers to donate worldwide.
As the marathon took off, TheSpeedGamers introduced a new way to choose stunts. The project was titled “The Wheel of Misery,” where the gamers spun a wheel to find out what they would do for donations. (Eat something, Sing, etc.) However, victims of the wheel had the power to avoid stunts that they would absolutely NOT do, such as a person with a gag reflex problem opting out of eating a disgusting concoction.
